Serres Makedonia

The prevalent characteristics of the natural landscape of the department of Serres are, the immense fertile plain, the wetland of Lake Kerkini, the wetland of the former Delta of Strimon river, the forest of Lailias on the mountain chain of Vrondou, and the deep precipitous ravine of the river Angitis. Also extremely significant is the speleological wealth of the department, the leading role being played by the cave of Alistrati. Furthermore, of much interest are the hot medicinal waters and the spas situated in Sidirokastro, Aggistro and Nigrita.
Today the city of Serres is classified third in jewelry fabrication in the whole of Greece while according to its population it holds the first rank. In fact, in Serres there are more than 70 workshops fabricating mainly rings, ear-rings and crosses. Their creations are distinguished for elaborate designs inspired from the antiquity, Byzantine, post-Byzantine and Hellenistic periods.
The Hellenic silversmith's and goldsmith's center (ELKA) that is under the aegis of the Ministry of Development, gave the city of Serres the name of "Jeweled City". Two signaling plates were therefore placed in the main entries to the city, namely at the junction Serres-Thessaloniki-Promachonas and the junction of Amfipolis on the NR Serres-Kavala.
